John and Anna moved their family to Limon, Colorado, in 1917, where they remained until 1933. Their two youngest children, Irvin and Reidar, were born there (in 1918 and 1922, respectively). They were accompanied by Anna's mother, Malena Larson, who died in 1921.

The friend in the photo, Gertrud Reini, was the daughter of John Gunliksen Reini, who served as pastor at Walk's Camp Lutheran Church, of which the family were members.
